Russia's floating nuclear power plant, Akademik Lomonosov, leaving the service base Rosatomflot on August 23, 2019. For some experts, nuclear energy — in all forms, large or small — has an important role to play in that transition. Globally, the construction of conventional nuclear power plants dipped following the Chernobyl meltdown in 1986. Russia has already built or designed nuclear plants — the traditional type — for China, India, Bangladesh, Turkey, Slovakia, Egypt and Iran. “It certainly dampens the excitement abroad,” said John Parsons, a senior lecturer at MIT and a financial economist focused on nuclear energy.

While not strictly an IPO, the listing was soon followed by Vietnamese tech unicorn VNG's filing to list on the Nasdaq. As local companies grow, "they are outgrowing the ability of those markets to provide the capital that they need," said Drew Bernstein, co-chairman of accounting firm MarcumAsia. Since the fallout over Didi in the summer of 2021, regulation and a tepid U.S. IPO market have stalled most Chinese listing plans. She said given the success of Southeast Asian ride-hailing company Grab , more Vietnamese companies are starting to look beyond the domestic market to regional business. George Chan, global IPO leader at EY, expects "a lot" of companies from Southeast Asia will reach the IPO stage in the next 12 to 18 months, and might also consider the Hong Kong exchange.

VC powerhouse Sequoia Capital announced Tuesday that it is splitting into three entities. One of those entities, Sequoia China, known locally as HongShan, will operate as a distinct firm. The mighty Sequoia Capital is dropping branches. The decision puts to bed any question of a power struggle at one of Silicon Valley's most respected firms. And unlike some other global firms that had veto power over investments overseas, according to Bloomberg, Sequoia China had full autonomy to strike its own deals.

SINGAPORE — Compared to startups, Southeast Asia's venture capital firms could see a bigger impact from the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank because finding a replacement for the U.S.-based bank in the region will be challenging. "I think from a VC firm's perspective, you will see a bigger impact here," said David Gowdey, managing partner at Jungle Ventures, told CNBC's "Squawk Box Asia." While SVB served tech startups and venture capital firms mostly located in the U.S. or have a presence in the U.S. Some VCs based in Southeast Asia — such as Jungle Ventures and Golden Gate Ventures — were also clients of SVB. The bank provided VC firms and startups access to the U.S. capital market as well as networking opportunities in the U.S.
However, Russia's invasion of Ukraine, which has dented economies around the world, is contributing to growth slowing down in Indonesia. The food sector has been strongly affected by the war in Ukraine, which has disrupted wheat and fertilizer imports into Indonesia. After recording economic growth of 5.3% in 2022, the strongest for almost a decade, Indonesia is now braced for growth to slow down intensified by Russia's invasion of Ukraine. With weakening commodity and energy prices denting export earnings, Indonesia is contending with economic headwinds as fears of a global recession mount. Indonesia, one of Asia's success stories of recent years, has been less hard-hit than many emerging economies by the war in Ukraine.

Asia — especially Southeast Asia — remains a bright spot, even as the global economy looks set to head into recession next year, economists say. "Despite this, Asia remains a relative bright spot in an increasingly dimming global economy," the IMF said in its latest outlook report "Asia Sails Into Headwinds From Rate Hikes, War, and China Slowdown." The IMF predicted growth for Asia and the Pacific at 4% this year and 4.3% in 2023, with both below the 5.5% average over the last two decades. Still, they are higher than the fund's forecasts for Europe and the U.S. The IMF is expecting growth of 3.1% in 2022 and 0.5% in 2023 for the euro area; and 1.6% growth this year and 1% next year for the U.S.
